Aggie Business Spotlight: The Staton Wood Company
Inspired by the 90’s culture, Ronnie Staton ‘18 and his wife, Damaris Staton have taken a unique approach to their business, The Staton Wood Company. Their business is best known for producing custom, handcrafted wood gifts and apparel in the Greensboro, North Carolina market.
“Being in business with my wife is very strategic, I am the artist and craftsman and she is everything I am not. She runs the business and handles everything from customer service to the finances,” said Ronnie.
Since childhood, Ronnie always knew he had an artistic gift and attended Alamance Community College to receive his associate’s degree in advertisement graphic design in 2016. However, growing up in Greensboro, he set his sights on attending North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and received his bachelor’s degree in graphic communications in 2018.
“When Ronnie attended North Carolina A&T, I felt like I went through the process with him to become an Aggie. I worked and ran a household with three small children while he attended school. It was a time in our lives that kept us focused and determined to make it,” said Damaris.
In 2016, the Staton’s’ launched The Staton Wood Company after Ronnie was introduced to a laser-cutting machine at ACC that allowed his creativity to take flight.
“I always loved the huge chains rappers wore in music videos and I had an idea that was out of the box to design jewelry out of wood,” said Ronnie. “I learned very early in the business when working with a graphic machine that everything is based on your level of creativity and talent that controls the machine.”
The Staton Wood Company is client-driven and creates custom designs to meet the demands of its customers. The company specializes in making all wood products such as jewelry, trophies, ornaments, door hangers, signage, puzzles, porch signs, business cards and so much more.
“During the pandemic, our business grew exponentially and it was amazing to experience the number of customers who trusted us to produce large, quality orders for them,” said Damaris.
“What has been great about this experience, our children are learning how to become entrepreneurs by watching us and they are promoting the brand by giving gifts to their teachers and friends. “Our family comes from a solid foundation and lineage of entrepreneurs on both sides and it is our hopes our children will continue this legacy.”
