It all started for Tylik McMillan ’19 at the dinner table helping his grandmother make preparations for the local NAACP chapter or school board meetings to address issues in the community. Today, he serves as the national director of the youth and college division for the National Action Network, the civil rights organization founded by the Rev. N.C. A&T Alumna Tina Taylor Leads Global STEM Initiatives for Youth
Before the pandemic hit, Tina L. Taylor ’95 spent the majority of her time in South Africa operating two nonprofits: Heritage STEM Camps Foundation, a venture capital STEM boot camp, and Heritage Leadership Academy, a boarding school for girls. Both organizations engineer ideas that impact thousands of minority women and children in the U.S. and Africa by driving community transformation and building economic parity. In addition, Taylor is the COO of Core3 Innovation, a technology management firm based in Raleigh. North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University celebrated its annual Fall Convocation program virtually Thursday, Oct. 29, via Zoom. During the program, Chancellor Harold L. Martin Sr. presented the state of the university and welcomed alumni to the “Greatest Homecoming on Earth” virtual celebration. Jelani M. Favors ’97, Ph.D., served as the keynote speaker. Amid COVID-19, a sorely missed tradition of this year’s homecoming at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University will be packing Truist Stadium. For nearly 40 years, Aggies young and old have returned again and again for tailgates, the huge parades and cheering on the Aggies and the Blue & Gold Marching Machine. For many alumni, it is hard to imagine our university without its massive arena known as Aggie Stadium from 1981 to 2018, then BB&T Stadium until this year when BB&T and Sun Trust merged to become Truist. North Carolina A&T Names Inaugural Class for Advisory Council on Alumni Relations
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University announced today the inaugural members of the Advisory Council on Alumni Relations, a non-fiduciary, non-governing group that works with the Office of Alumni Relations by providing feedback that enhances programming for alumni engagement. The council consists of up to 15 members appointed by the chancellor. Each member will serve for two years with term appointments starting Aug. 1 of each cycle. Also, a board of trustees’ member will be appointed bi-annually to serve as council chair. North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University welcomes its 2020-22 cohort of new members to the Young Alumni Council (YAC). Members of YAC serves as change agents who understand the mission, vision, and goals of the university by assisting with bridging the gap between the University and young alumni through awareness, connection and involvement. The mission of YAC is to assist in the areas of professional development, networking, community service and philanthropy. Aggie M.E.N. are recruiting A&T Alumni to Mentor Male First-Year College Students
The Aggie M.E.N. (Male Empowerment Network) program is designed to pair minority male freshmen with mentors to be a resource on which to lean, someone that can help with the transition from high school to college, or someone to get a good word of wisdom when necessary. Aggie M.E.N. believe that the more connected the freshmen are with the campus, the community, and the village, the more likely that freshmen will be a sophomore in good academic standing. Good fortune played a part in leading Jazmaine Mayo ’19 to experience a summer abroad – going to London alone and working there for three straight months –serving people who are down on their luck. However, it was Mayo’s education at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and commitment to social work that ultimately made it possible. Mayo found out about the opportunity when she happened to be sitting in sociology and social work professor Pamela Moye’s office last spring.
