On Friday, November 1, 2019, inside the historic James B. Dudley High School Auditorium in Greensboro, North Carolina, over 200 Dudley High School Panthers, Dudley High Alumni, and A&T Aggies were gathered for a historic day. For the first time in several decades, the local community celebrated “Dudley Day”, a former annual recognition of the life of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s second president Dr. James B. North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University alumni are donating nearly $8,000 to the General Scholarship Fund in memory of Anthony “Tony” Mangol during a homecoming tradition he is credited with helping to establish more than 40 years ago. Mangol, known to his dearest friends as “Jamaica,” died suddenly May 8 at his home in Starke, Florida. He was 65 years old. Mangol started tailgating in the old Student Union parking lot the Friday before the Aggies’ homecoming football game when he attended the university in the late ‘70s, longtime friend and fellow N.C. Fifty Years Later the Class of 1969 Reflects on the Greensboro Uprising
The year 1969 marked the culmination of an extremely racially tense decade. The era required many in the African American community to cooperate in an effort to obtain equal rights all across the southeastern United States. Many times, peaceful protests gave way to hateful, violent, and at times even fatal outcomes. The North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University class of 1969 witnessed this tragic turn first-hand. The unrest was initiated at James B. Dudley High School, an all-black school, located less than two miles away from North Carolina A&T’s campus. Claude Barnes, a student who was favored to win the SGA race, was omitted from the ballot a day…

In addition, he led the MEAC in interceptions as the Black College Defensive Back of the Year and Division I-AA All American. “For years, my identity was always football and when I…
