Reflections by Velma R. Speight ’53 on Naming
My Dear Aggies and Friends, My heart is still full and I want to personally thank each of you who shared and celebrated with me during the naming dedication of Speight Hall. Having a residence hall at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University named in my honor is truly one of the greatest accomplishments of my life. Your support, whether in person, via the live stream or in spirit, warmed my heart and means more to me than I can adequately articulate. Thank you for all your kind well-wishes, thoughts, flowers, cards and generous gifts. I appreciate every single one. It has been and will continue to be my…

Stanford Brothers Endowment Established to Support North Carolina A&T Students
In the late 1950s and 60s, North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University athletics were at an all-time high of winning championships for the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA). It was a very familiar euphoric feeling that Aggies feel today with the university’s current athletic success. For the Stanford brothers, Pollard ‘61, Lorenzo ‘61 and Carl ’63, they were a powerful dynamic to Aggie football, being the first three siblings to play a collegiate sport at the same time in the CIAA in 1960. As of March 2022, the Stanford Brothers Endowment was established to support students facing financial hardship at North Carolina A&T. The endowment gift was made by…

The charter students of both sorority chapters were part of the first generation of women to be enrolled at North Carolina A&T in over 25 years. They were integral in reestablishing student life and culture for women. In reviewing records from the University Archives, accounts in historically Black newspapers, and the chapter’s histories, we can learn amazing stories of the women who chartered these historic chapters and the impact that they…
