Meet Our Alumni Chapter Presidents

Durham Alumni Chapter

Chapter President: Rebecca Redd-Jolly, 1980

Major: Psychology

What is your career background?

As a member of the Army ROTC I began my career as an Army Intelligence Officer.  I reached the rank of captain, and was honorably discharged after over five years in the military. I decided to study law and graduated with a jurist doctorate from Howard University School of Law. Worked at the Public Defender’s Office in Atlanta, Georgia. After getting married, we moved to Macon, Georgia. I received an opportunity to work as a Legislative Analyst for the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C. and stayed until my parent got sick.  We moved back to Durham, so I could care for my mother. Even though my spouse passed, along with my mother, I was able to work as a legal advisor for family matters. In recent years, I worked briefly at Duke Law School and have done legal research for United Lex Law Firm. During 2020, I worked for the Decennial Census as an Office Operation Supervisor with oversight of five counties in developing strategies and methods to increase metrics and performance.

Does your chapter have any Aggie traditions?

We like to sing the Alma Mater after each general body meeting. Before I took over as president of the Durham Alumni Chapter it hadn’t been active for almost seven years. Since we have been revitalized, the chapter is still working on creating traditions.

What do you love most about the city/region where your chapter is located?

The history of the area includes the Black Wall Street and North Carolina Mutual Insurance Company.  Downtown has been revitalized with great restaurants and night life.

Please share any community service events in which your chapter has participated and/or hosted

During the start of the school year, the chapter supports a local elementary school with supplies. We have also donated to the A&T Food Pantry.

We partnered with the Durham Bulls Baseball in support of Black History Month.

Last summer, we had a Zoom meeting on mental health during the pandemic.

Supported our Aggies running for political office.

Provided scholarship funds to deserving incoming freshman Aggie students.

Why is it important for alumni to join your chapter? And how can they join?

It is critical for all Aggies to participate in their local alumni chapter. As ambassadors of our illustrious university, we make sure we all matter. Most alumni join after being invited to our general meetings. I am always so positive when I encounter another Aggie and I always ask them to give the alumni chapter a try!

I am a talented, multifaceted professional with nearly two decades of experience in Corporate Social Responsibility, Community Relations, Communications, and Public Relations. Does your chapter have any Aggie traditions?

The greatest tradition that is always largely attended pre-COVID is the annual student send-off. This event is held at the home of alumnus, Chuck Burch where Aggies, future Aggies, and friends of Aggies can attend. Scholarships are awarded to incoming freshmen, good food is served, and the pool is used to cool down during the hot Texas summer.

What do you love most about the city/region where your chapter is located?

What I love most about the DFW area is that the economy is really good. We have a lot of employment opportunities with tons of major corporations headquarters. I also love that we don’t have state taxes! And the Texas brisket is AMAZING!!!

Please share any community service events in which your chapter has participated and/or hosted

Pre-COVID we have been active in supporting local sororities and fraternities with HBCU fairs. We have also been involved with providing support at Ronald McNair Elementary in Dallas. Alumni typically support each other’s entrepreneurial endeavors.

Why is it important for alumni to join your chapter? And how can they join?

It is important that alumni join the DFW chapter as we try to establish more name recognition across the Southwest. Although, we are more than 1,000 miles away from Aggieland it is important for the world to know the largest HBCU Aggie Pride is spread worldwide. It is also a good way to get acclimated to a new area if you have no family or friends. Meetings are held every 3rd Saturday at 12 noon via Zoom. Emails can be sent to dfwaggies@gmail.com to be added to chapter correspondence.
