N.C. A&T Alumna Receives the 2019 HBCU Alumni of the Year for Education from the DC Metro HBCU Alumni Alliance, Inc.
Dr. Iris Wagstaff ’96 was awarded the 2019 HBCU Alumni of the Year Award from the DC Metro HBCU Alumni Alliance Award for her work in STEM Education. The DC Metro Alumni Alliance Award was presented to her at the 3rd Annual HBCU Alumni Black-Tie Gala held at the National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC. This gala was created to celebrate the history, legacy, and community involvement of HBCU alumni. The honorees are those who have had a significant impact on their community and in their careers.
Dr. Wagstaff, a Goldsboro, N.C. native, is currently the STEM program director for the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). She has more than 20 years of STEM outreach and advocacy in the community by developing informal science programs, mentoring STEM majors, equipping parents with tools and resources to encourage their children in STEM, and providing culturally relevant science education pedagogy to teachers.
In 1993, Wagstaff received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and in 1996 she received her master’s degree in chemistry from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. In addition, she received her Ph.D. in STEM Education Research and Policy Analysis (K-12).
