The Impact of the National Alumni Scholarship
“As long as I can remember my family has nurtured me with love, compassion, and unyielding support. That is why one could only imagine how one of my favorite family member’s unforeseen health issues began to challenge my peace of mind. My family’s mover-and-shaker, was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2008. I remember seeing him on his hospital bed, reassuring me that everything would be okay with uncertainty in his eyes. Though I was falling apart inside, I owed it to him to carry on my days with a smile, fulfilling my purpose academically and in my community. By God’s grace, my father finally was able to receive the operation he needed to change his life forever in 2013. However, my father, now disabled and is unable to support my family financially. I tried my best in high school to keep my grades stellar, stay involved in extracurricular activities, and I had studied for the SAT and ACT since the 7th grade. I was on a mission to get a full ride scholarship to college. In my senior year I got over 50 college acceptances and over one million dollars in scholarship offers but my eyes were set on North Carolina A&T. My chances of coming to my first choice university, all depended on if I could get a full academic scholarship from the National Alumni Scholarship. That is why I am still so grateful to the university and the Alumni Association for this life-changing opportunity. I remember the tears in my eyes when I got that call.
